About Don’t Cry For Me, USA

Don’t Cry For Me, USA is a travel blog that has been through a lot of iterations.

Origins: The Tumblr Blog…

It started out as a study abroad blog on Tumblr when I spent a semester in Argentina Fall of 2013 (Southern Hemisphere Spring of 2013).

After I returned from my semester abroad, I continued to update the blog every once in a while, but not as frequently as when I was abroad.

I moved it to my own personal website and domain in January of 2016, using Ruby on Rails as a framework, what I knew for programming at the time. It was mostly done as a personal project and a way to make my blog my own instead of property of Tumblr, which was property of Yahoo, where I worked at the time.

In August of 2016, I quit my job at Yahoo and moved from Omaha to Denver, where I began my own business as a freelancer, Spencer Cloud Consulting, LLC, doing web development and consulting. This is where I started working a lot more with WordPress and making various WordPress themes for different businesses throughout the Denver area. I then realized how much easier it would be to run Don’t Cry For Me, USA from WordPress instead of Ruby on Rails. Though either platform works fine, RoR is usually used for startups needing a lean and quick way to build a new technical product, and WP is usually used for managing content (such as blogs).

From Ruby on Rails to WordPress

In January of 2018, I created my own WordPress theme “Viajar” in January 2018 and moved my site once again. Now I have more control of my blog, as well as a much quicker and easier way to create new content (hopefully reducing the time between each blog post).

I continue to travel and write about it when I can. I have a lot of catching up to do, but I don’t dread it. After all, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t enjoy it.
